Senior NADRA officer arrested for anti-army posts on WhatsApp

Cybercrime agency cracks down on "hate content" amid fears of social media fueling unrest

Pakistan’s National Cyber Crimes Agency has arrested Hina Rehman Sheikh, a senior NADRA executive, for allegedly running a WhatsApp group spreading anti-military content during heightened tensions with India. The arrest, made during a raid at NADRA’s Abbott Road office in Lahore, comes as authorities warn against online hate speech targeting state institutions.

Officials confirmed Sheikh, whose phone was seized for evidence, faces charges under the PECA for “inciting public sentiment” against national security agencies. The crackdown follows a surge in hostile social media activity as cross-border hostilities escalate, with the cyber agency vowing zero tolerance for content deemed destabilizing.

The arrest highlights growing government scrutiny over digital dissent, particularly amid military tensions. While details of the alleged WhatsApp messages remain undisclosed, the case signals an aggressive stance against online criticism of Pakistan’s armed forces during the crisis. Investigations continue, with more arrests possible.

Meanwhile, political leaders, including the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), condemned India’s recent drone strikes in Pakistan, framing the digital crackdown as part of a broader effort to maintain national unity. The incident underscores the delicate balance between free expression and national security as the nuclear-armed rivals remain on edge.
